I studied at Oxford House College after a friend recommended
the college. Studying here has opened up a lot of possibilities
for me. When I first arrived I spoke very little English,
now thanks to Oxford House College I am studying an International
Politics Degree course at Middlesex University.
The college offers all the conditions needed for overseas
students to achieve their goals. My goal is to eventually
return to Angola and enter politics because I want to
be one of the new generation who make a difference and
improve people’s lives. The college has supported
me in every way. I attended the General English and Cambridge
First Certificate classes where I vastly improved my understanding
of English. In particular they helped me learn new ways
to discuss issues as well helping me prepare for my interview
for university entry.
As I have experience of teaching my native tongue –
Portuguese – I can really appreciate just how good
the teachers at Oxford House College are. They teach in
such a way that allows students to pick up and understand
things properly. Their excellent methods and the quality
of materials really helped me progress even further. I’ve
learned such a lot which I will treasure for the rest
of my life.
All my teachers are remarkable; however Jason has made
a remarkable impact on me. He really knows how to teach.
He introduces what’s happening in today’s
news into his classes and making it relevant and interesting.
The free internet is a great facility for students. I’ve
used it to research university courses and to keep in
touch with family and friends.
In the coffee bar you can get to know other people. It’s
easy to chat to the staff and students there. I realised
that even from the coffee bar I’ve learned a lot
of food vocabulary in English. I tried to make use of
my time by picking up new words and applying them coherently.
I am a bit inquisitive, that is the main reason why the
time was so valuable to me.
I make good use of the library. You can borrow books,
listen to CDs, watch videos and do your homework. Borrowing
the library’s material over the week was a big step
forward as it gave me the chance to develop faster. I
began to understand the impact of body language on our
conversation and of course improved my grammar. This gave
me the chance to analyse and improve on what I understood.
The welcome I received was really tremendous. On the
first day I was met at the airport and then when I arrived
at the college the staff were very friendly and helpful,
especially as I didn’t speak much English. Niki
and Tim were great in helping me with my university references
and application. They are all very kind and I can’t
thank them enough. They have a spirit of community that
underpins the quality of Oxford House College.
I quite frankly can’t describe how fantastic London
is. It’s a great place to live. The best thing is
that it’s multicultural; you meet people from all
round the world. You can learn how they behave and think
about the challenges of today’s world, share different
cultures and hear points of view from a variety of backgrounds.
Life is beautiful in London. There are so many shops and
market stalls everywhere and you can travel around easily
because the transport system is so comprehensive.
Overall I’d say Oxford House College is a great
school. It has brilliant facilities and a great set up
for delivering knowledge. There is a real passion for
teaching and their English teaching strategies are excellent.
It’s not only a reputable school where you can learn
and share the benefits but also it is great value for
money too.
